I don't really understand the term "Jam" as a genre of music.

All the Jam bands I've ever heard were merely really good bands that like to put all sorts of influences into their music and love to play together more then to make music just to sell records.

I don't understand why people have to give these bands a genre, especially "Jam." Jamming is just playing and enjoying music, usually with a lot of improvisation. Bands like Led Zeppelin used to jam all the time, but we don't call them "Jam Bands."

I think people just call some bands Jam Bands because they feel an impulsive need to stick all music into genres and because they don't understand the complexity of musicianship or enjoyment.

Hi everybody,
I don't know if I'm on the right forum, I just registered two minutes ago......anyway, let me introduce myself, I'm a french student, I'm on my fourth year of english studies at university and for my ...... how shall I say that......my (memoire) I chose to work on Woodstock Festival 1969! But for this year, I have to work on my first part which is "the ideology of the hippies". So here I am, hoping for answers from all of you, whether you were hippies in the sixties or not...I just want to learn more about this amazing movement for you all know that books are useful but it isn't worth real discussions with those who were (or are still) really involved in it!!
